PAWS (Pet Awareness Workshops) Program

PAWS is the Coorong District Council’s Pet Awareness Workshops that are provided as a continuation to the successful PetPep (Pets and People Education Program) program introduced in 2005. The program has provided pet safety and personal health information to over 600 primary school and kindergarten children during this time.

The workshops are generally held to coincide with the dog registration period and therefore reinforces Council’s legislative role under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

Pet Awareness WorkshopS (PAWS) is the Council’s revitalised school based pet education program that involves working with the Coorong District’s local schools to provide information on responsible pet ownership to primary school and kindergarten children.

Children should be aware of the joys of pet ownership as well as the health implications of living with pets. Therefore, encouraging interaction with children within an educational context is an important aspect of Council’s role. The PAWS program is helping to educate the next generation of pet owners.

The school visits are conducted routinely, usually on a two yearly basis, and provide information, tips and demonstrations regarding acting safely around dogs, as well as practical health information for children to live happily, healthily and above all safely with their pets. Teaching greeting techniques, patting, and also actions they should take if they are approached by an aggressive dog. Teaching how to stand still, curl up in a ball and protection of head and face should they be knocked over. Each workshop takes from 20 to 30 minutes and groups of students rotate through the host classroom.

Children receive as part of these visits a Council promotional bag the includes, a colouring-in and activity book, dog and cat information booklets, health information, fruit, water and best of all (when available), an interactive time with an obedient and friendly companion dog to engage the students. All in all an educational experience not to be missed.
